I'm at work, at long way from my owners manual and this has been puzzling me this lunchtime. My car has two of the flat black, credit card sized keyless entry fobs.

Only one seems to do anything - when I press the button on it the top LED comes on - shows a car with 4 doors open next to it. This lets me start the car.

The other one lights the other LED - that shows just one door open.

Have I got a broken fob? Or is this normal?

Did you get the owners manual with the car? If so, it describes the function of the button and what the two lights mean.

The idea is to only have one of the cards with you and not use the key (I guess you already guessed that!) Both keys should happily open and start the car on their own.

I can't remember the exact purpose of the lights but I think it has something to do with telling you the status of the car locks.

If you can't find it in your manual, let me know and I'll scan the page from my CL manual for you.

Also bear in mind that the battery could be on their way out.

I have got all the manuals and stacks of bills etc etc :-)

However I'm at work and the manuals are on my bedside table at home, 30 miles away (I bit of light bedside reading).

The second fob is definitely not working then - the screen on the car says "Chip Card not recognised" or something similar.

I'll read up when I get home.

Thanks very much for your kind offer though.

Edit: (And the reason that I was testing them was cos I had just changed the batteries as a precautionary measure)

I sometimes get that. Often caused by the battery or occasionally having both cards in the car at the same time.
