With a name like mine there's really only two car companies I can look at. LOL

I've been toying with the idea of getting a Cosworth 25.16
I'd like one to just put away really. I've always liked them, I've got plenty of space, and its the kind of car that would be nice in the corner of the garage covered in a big Merc cover.
They are very accessible at the moment, with good ones going for around 7 and 8 grand.
I'd like to get Black with Black leather, and automatic if possible. I've got a 993 for tearing it up, but one of these executive expresses look not only good value, but are bound to go through the roof one day.
I've seen the odd £3k ones, but they are generally not what I'm after, with a few big bills in the not too distant future.
I've had a look around, and found this one on flea bay.
Its up for just over £5k, or best offer, so not that dear considering whats out there
It looks like the top spec to me.

Cosworth

It looks in good order, with a few good modifications. Rear suspension service, and headwork. Its the right spec for me, and the trim looks in good order.

What am I looking out for when I view it ? You know, the special stuff.
Its got a full history, etc etc, I'm keen to know where the big pitfalls in buying one of these are.
So come on guys, give me some feedback from the PH Mercedes Massive.

The owner of that one is a member on Pistonheads and on a Mercedes owners forum I'm part of, too.
He is a PROPER Mercedes fanatic, so his car will be extremely well looked after.

Good luck with your search!

That looks lovely for the money. I bought one back in April this year for just under 3k. 134k, manual, half leather.

It looks tidy but is starting to show rust under the bodykit. Same colour but the chrome's been painted black, which I quite like, makes it look a tad meaner.

My advice to you would be to get it inspected by a specialist as there's a lot to go wrong, especially with the self leveling suspension and ASD. I didn't with mine, just bought it on a whim. No regrets though, had a few minor running issues but nothing serious. It's been well used since I've had it having done 2 track days plus being my current smoker. Tough as old boots, the engines can take a right hammering - love to be revved, sound like Ford BDAs at high revs. Though I'm not sure if an auto box would suite the power delivery.

If you need any specific advice let me know. I've got a pretty good understanding of the injection system having overhauled mine. They're pretty complex on those being a mechanically based system with an ecu clagged on.

Chris.

Don't want to reign on your parade, but the automatic is hardly the choice to go for.
Also upon further inspection you will see itsd hardly top spec either - No A/C, heated seats, electric seats etc.
Lastly the leather looks as is it has been reconnolised - not a bad thing, but you can clearly see that a good job was unfortunately not done.

If you want one for investment purposes my own opinion is manual, aircon, blueblack or silver, full leather, unmodified in any way, 70k miles, all trim intact, door cards good, SLS retained and working and underneath clean (there are some points where they can rust on the floor pan). Don't discount the 2.3-16 either, not as much poke, but it's all subjective, they aren't the fastest of cars.

Enemy is rust round the kit, rear lights, front lights....respray time is going to cost not far off the value of the car.

If you're looking for a smoker though, a good 'un can be bought for just over a grand and at that price why worry about rust or whether the timing chain might let go or not.

I loved my 2.3 - such great handling...until a dork of a driving instructor rear-ended it - didn't handle too well after that.....

I bought my 2.3-16 last may, only paid £1700 but this was bearing in mind that I'd need to spend £600 or so getting the rear arches re done. Add in a few other things and I'll be looking at getting on for £3000 or so when it's done. For £5k you should get an exceptional example, any less than that and I think you've got pretty good grounds for haggling. Classic Cars magazine currently suggest £4750 for a mint 16v 190. Anyone charging nearer £7k and above is going to have their car on the market quite a while, unless it's very, very low mileage. I'll echo what was said about the auto gearbox, I've not driven one with auto cogs, but I can't see it suiting the car very much. If you go to look at this one or any other 16v be sure to check for rust underneith the plastic trim around the car. This won't be possible everywhere on the car as they are bolted down but you can have a good feel under the arches to get a good idea. I'd deffinately recomend joining up to www.mercedes190.co.uk, really helpful bunch of people. I'm Norman87 on there by the way
