Well, thought the auto box probs of leaks sorted, but if this is connected..

Mrs Melv just plods to and from work with the occassional motorway blast in her 5YO, 20,000 mile SLK230.

I was 'allowed' to use it yesterday to go to a meeting in the Cotswolds, so roof down, jacket on.....love it.

However, did two overtakes and nailed it and it was as if I'd lost drive eek -didn't hit rev limiter....(does it have one?)

Had to coast to a halt (sooooo embarrassing...rolleyes) Engine would rev in D, but no progress -so cycled it from N back to D and it was fine!!

Nailed it up hill near my house on return (at least I cld walk if it failed completely wink ), and it did it again......any suggestions appreciated!

Hi Melv,

First ever post on here, so apologies if off the mark.

However, I had exactly this happen to my W210 E300 DT. After being at my local MB dealer for a few days, they discovered that I had a transmission fluid leak. I needed a new gearbox solenoid, complete change of transmission fluid and a new radiator (not related, but crumbled upon fixing the new hoses). All in, I had a bill of £1200.

As I said, that was a MB main dealer and you can very likely get it done for a lot less at a specialist/independant.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

Regards,
Richard.

Hi, what condition is the ATF in? If this is the 5 speed box (there will be a S/W switch if it is) then they are meant to be sealed for life. However as the ATF degrades it can cause problems such as lack of drive. Also check that the level of ATF is correct. Unfortunately there is no gearbox dipstick so you will have to buy one or bring it to a garage to get the level checked.

Hi

I never trusted the "for-life-fillings", always changed the gear-box fluid
at around 60,000kms, around 40000miles, when some service -work was to be done anyway.

Enjoy your car :-)

Guys -thanx for feedback -it is the five speed box. Fluid replaced twice recently afte seals failed on switch pack -I must assume my guy replaced it with the correct fluid....rolleyes

Crazy with the dipstick, if you pull it out to check level it breaks!!

Anyways, it's due service soon so will get specialist to check it out.

You cannot buy a dipstick but you can buy a tool to measure the level. If you do a search on mbclub.co.uk you will find more info and the part number.
