Hi All,

I have a 1999 E240 Estate (W210?). It runs and drives well and the gearchanges are 'normal', as long as you use less than 3/4 throttle. It has no problem reaching high motorway speeds, and pulls well at low/ mid revs in all gears. The gearbox was replaced (or had a complete overhaul) only 10k ago.

The problem is when you try to accelerate hard, like you would expect to do when overtaking.

At WOT he car struggles to accelerate smoothly, and really bogs down at anything past 4000rpm or so. Under hard acceleration it will kick down, but then the gearbox holds in gear rather than changing back up. By backing off the throttle considerably and letting the revs drop, it then will change up.

It is becoming really frustrating, so I hope someone out there can help me.

Cheers
kf

Could be the Air Flow Meter?

Given you are the 3rd person to say that, I;m going to order one today and see if it fixes the problem. I normally never drive it, but I need to take it to Glasgow next week (because it's got 7 seats), and I really don't fancy driving it the way it is!

It is the air flow meter. I had exactly this problem on a 99 E240 earlier this month. Go to over-take, boot it, and it rapidly loses power. The airflow meter cost just £45 + vat from GSF Car Parts. Google 'German Swedish & French Car Parts' for your nearest branch.

MAF here too! Only knew I had a problem when trying to "make progress" along the M3 in the early hours one night. Car (E430) drove perfectly at lower engine speeds. I have heard that VW/Audi units are the same and may be cheaper.

Good luck

I would'nt chance it. I have been told that using the wrong unit can cause serious damage to the ECU.

Fair comment. Worth checking with a Merc guru first.

Running like a dream. Bought an OEM replacement part for £48 from Europarts. Simple job to fit, and it is amazing the difference it made. Cheers everyone!!
