CL 55 AMG (Komp) opinions please
Discussion
Hello folks,
I'm starting to look at changing my everyday car. I have seen a few nice CL 55's the kompressor versions which I believe are basically the same engine as an SL 55 AMG. I have had an SL 55 AMG and I loved it - but I need something more family friendly but don't want to compromise on grunt and performance.
Anyone got any thoughts on the CL55AMG Komp
Any must haves on the options list? I have to say I'm not all keen on the blinds; but I love keyless go.
Cheers

I'm running a CL55 at the mo - bought it as a bit of a stop gap car 9 months ago whilst I waited for the V10 R8 order to be confirmed.........love the car to bits.......real event each time you go for a drive and I personally think they're a really elegant looking car......like it so much decided to keep for another year and save my money on the R8 while the prices sort themselves out........on the other hand quite tempted by a new RS6 at knock down price;) Then again might get a stage 2 tune at DMS for some added fun and enjoy the noise for another year!
Opps forgot to say ref the options........CL55 should be pretty well loaded with all the options.....mines got just about every option fitted......Keyless,TV,Distronic,heated/vented/massage seats etc etc....
Price wise original owner paid somewhere close to 110k (laugh my socks of everytime I look at the original invoice) I gave 25k.....appreciate I'll have lost a sizable wedge of that in the current climate but to me price to change is what counts on the next car so it's all relative.........

hmm interesting. i am thinking cl55 too, but also cls 55. similar rear room, but concerned that cl has even moreelectrics to go wrong, and in my price range (15-20 for cl, and 20-25 for cls), probably looking at an 03 cl, versus an o5 cls. any thoughts. also, in the background might consider 550i/650i, or b5/b10....my first post - hooray !
I've seen some real crappy CL 55's and some gems.
The one I went with in the end needed:
a new IAT Change Pump (supercharger coolant pump)
4 new tyres
new engine mounts
new transmission mounts
Total: circa 1600
It's now spot on but the price reflected the bit's that needed doing.
Look for paint bubbling and get one with a full merc dealer service history or you're likely to have problems with the bodywork warranty. When it comes to replacing the sparkplugs you'll have to do 2 per cylinder and they aren't cheap. Check the air suspension and the air suspension fluid as it can get really pricey really quickly if that starts to malfunction. Fluid should be like warm honey in colour and texture.
It's great to drive - space in the rear is ok - but access is a bit limited
Performance is outstanding. Especially good on long journeys it just eats the miles up.
Build quality of the interior is average - a few loose bits of trim that I've sorted now.
What I really like is the look, it doesn't really stand out too much but when you give it some beans it literally launches you at the horizon and just doesn't stop pulling, the noise on the CL55K is pretty nice too.

What power does the Stage 2 DMS put out for the 55K ?
Im still monitoring the prices for the 55K and 65 as per my previous posts. Im loving the depreciation on these things, but Ive set myself an 04 cut off limit as from what I can work out, its post 04 that Merc decided to try and start building and painting cars properly again. Im thinking that come June a bid of high 20s will get me a 65 at which point Ill be laughing like a drain, esp if DMS can work their magic to produce a figure of 700ponies (and the old 5 speeder can take it).
Unless I succumb to Del and LIOONY's constant harping on at me to get the 456 or we have a good early summer and I need to get myself a ragtop.

The CL is certainly family friendly, up to a max of four people. Interestingly, the rear seat area is actually roomier than the CLS (I have the CL, F-in-L had a CLS). A quick search on the Merc part of PH will provide a number of previous threads on the W215 CL, including what to look for when buying one used.I'm starting to look at changing my everyday car. Do you mean the 2nd generation W215 or the third (new) generation W216?
If you mean the W215 then is is certainly family friendly, up to a max of four people. Interestingly, the rear seat area is actually roomier than the CLS (I have the CL, F-in-L had a CLS). Are you saying there is a W216 CL55 Komp?If you mean the W215 then is is certainly family friendly, up to a max of four people. If not then the OP is clear enough that he is interested in a CL55 Kompressor and it would follow that could only be a W215

I found your comments on the interior space of your car interesting, never having been in a CL (W215) myself. I have always liked that car and remember well when Jeremy C tested the CL65 on TG
I have been in the new shape (CL63 AMG)and thought it a very pleasant place to be, although the aggression of the Exterior styling is quite different from the very serene & subtle interior
Have done some searching for you ...

Most of the general CL advise covers the CL55K too, particularly anything to do with electrics, corrosion or ABC suspension faults. This is a car where a full MB service history is essential, if only to ensure you get covered for any corrosion that might appear!
Just remember that the prices for parts, etc reflect their original £100k+ price tag, not what they cost now ....

I must admit that I didn't believe that a two-door coupe could have more space than the four-door saloon/coupe until I tried it ... the steep rake of the rear window and low roof line of the CLS certainly detract from the space compared to the CL, plus the CL has low set bucket seats in the back, which are superb ...

As for the new CL ... lovely interior but truly ugly rear end! I think it misses some of that powerful mean look that the W215 rear has ...
