Just topped mine up (E55) using normal ATF at first, then as the leak progressed ended up with a dedicated power steering fluid which I had to buy from a petrol station (read rip-off)
ATF is usually fine, the reservoir is at the front of the engine in between the blower pulley and the right hand (looking from the front of the car) air intake. Down a bit and bloody awkward.
If it needs topping up it's usually leaking though. Mine is the pipe which goes from the pump to the rack. part metal, part rubber and £150 + VAT from MB. <grrr>
