Replacement rear window R129 SL
Discussion
The windows can be replaced by any competent auto upholsterer. The price is £400 to £700. Your dealer can probably arrange it for you. Mine did, thus preserving the service history.
There is an enormous thread about this on one of the UK forums, I think MB Club, which is worth searching out. The main issue is that it is impossible (or, at least, none of us has yet managed it) to replace the windows with like-for-like material. They came ex works with Wo Pavin Flexglas, made by Gurit in the UK, in thicknesses of 1.5mm (rear window) and 1.25mm (side windows). The replacement windows are usually Ultralite BUV which is softer and thinner (1mm). The result is greater wind noise, with some billowing at speed, and increased sensitivity of the alarm to wind when parked with the roof up.
The alternative is a new rear roof section which runs at approximately £1,000 plus labour for the genuine part. There are a host of pattern parts available but you get what you pay for: either the genuine MB roof or one manufactured by KHM are the best.
