Thinking of using a current model E320 or 280 estate for high mileages.

Are there any rare expensive maintenance items that I'm going to encounter on a regular basis due to the rapid consumption of miles?

Did 320k miles in an '03 220cdi saloon and currently done 104k in an '07 saloon.I average approx 95k miles per year. Only thing they seem to have a weakness with is torque converter. Gearbox oil needs to be changed EVERY 40k in my experience not just the once at 40k miles as Mercedes specify.

If you only change it once at 40k miles you are likely to need a new converter at approx 120k miles and could possibly suffer gearbox issues as well.

Merc have just changed my gearbox oil at 104k under warranty as it is still in the warranty period, would have cost about £240 with them or £170 with a specialist otherwise. Torque converter is about £1400 ish I think. Well it is at my dealer.

Other than that mine have both been trouble free. HTH.

Thanks...smile

Is the 220 noticeably underpowered for, say, fast, hilly B roads or fully laden up motorway inclines?

My 220 cdi estate feels powerful enough for everything I've thrown at it, I've tried right foot to the floor up steep hills and it still pulls well, that said I've not yet driven it with 4 passengers and a bootfull.

The later 220's have 170bhp which is only 20bhp shy of the 280cdi, and from memory you only gain around 10% extra torque from the 280cdi over the 220.

That said, if I was buying again I'd probably go for the 320 if the price was right, but when I was looking they were £££s more than the 220.

Agree with the above. There seems no reason to buy the 280 over the 220 but the 320 is definately a superb engine and would be my choice if it was for my own private use. Fuel consumption will be higher. I average 47 mpg with my 220, mainly motorway driving. The 320 probably drops this to low 40's but still very exceptable considering the performance and better refinement.
