Unknown bit from a 2000 w210 estate

Can anyone tell me what this unit is for: 203 820 39 26 I have removed it for a photograph, but don't know how to attach it to this question !! It resided alongside the CD changer in my 320cdi estate. It was disconnected. There is a power connection and also a black tube going in and out, the ends of which are now attached to each other.

The car is not a UK one & was imported at sometime. These are the warranty claims:-
Rear axle noise 03/08/2000 @ 14km
Paint plastic cover front bumper 26/06/2001 @ 22501 miles
Audio damping/delay box, does not operate 12/07/2001 @ 31329 miles
Rear shock absorbers leaking 21/08/2003 @ 81839 miles
Trunk lid corroded / oxidized 23/09/2003 @ 81845 miles

Can you see where the warranty work was carried out.
Seems to have done 8000 in 3 weeks in 2001!!
Mileage now showing 76300. Car seems ok but obviously clocked.
Is there anyway of checking on previous ownership?
