Im thinking about one of these for my next car - something like this http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/856193.htm would seem ideal. I don't do a lot of miles (10 miles each way commute), and I fancy a comfy, reliable barge for relaxing driving, with adequate power (I'd like it to be quite swift, without needing to be a sportscar). Have I picked the right model ? Any comments re running costs, common problems etc ?
Thanks

That looks like a fairly straight motor at a good price. The alloys do not look like genuine AMG (the AMG logo should be on the spoke opposite the valve) and they also look like 18s. I'd check the operation of the hood to ensure it goes up and down ok. The plastic windows can crack on it too. I think that engine suffers from head gasket problems but am not sure. Check on mbclub.co.uk for more info as that engine is shared with the W124. Other than that, they're bullet-proof.
Manufacturers figures from a 1996 pricelist (city, EUDC, total) in MPG
SL320 - 15.4 - 30.7 - 22.6
SL500 - 12.9 - 28.5 - 19.8
Allowing for engine wear and tear (these cars are about 10+ years now), how heavy your right foot is, and the fact manufacturers claims are rarely achieved, there seems to be little in it in my opinion. Besides, the 5.0l engine is more than worth the extra fuel costs.
