You're in luck. On Sunday 1st August 2009 the Mercedes-Benz Club will be holding its annual SL day at Castle Howard, pretty near you. This is a good occasion if you like these cars. There will be about 200 to 250 SLs, SLCs and SLKs of all ages. The cost is £10 per car.

In the past this event has seen at least half a dozen Gullwings/300 SL roadsters, 20 to 40 Pagodas, 100 or more R107 SLs (the kind on Dallas/Beverly Hills Cop), 30 R129 SLs (the kind Princess Diana had), 40 R230 SLs (the current SL model), about 5 SLCs, 30 R170 SLKs (the first SLK) and 30 R171 SLKs (the current model). There may be slightly fewer cars this year as it is in the north. I will be attending with a R129, R107, R170 and possibly my W126 coupe.

The Mercedes-Benz Club also organises regional events, including drives out. I have to say, the membership it is quite old and sober but very enthusiastic. The annual subscription is only £30 and includes an extremely high quality monthly magazine and a good website forum. More information at www.mercedes-benz-club.co.uk

You can probably get away with turning up on the day. However, if you join the club (which as I say costs about £30 and includes a very good monthly magazine) you can then pay the £10 charge (which includes entry to Castle Howard itself) and get all of the necessary information. There is room for everyone in the club, it has a very large and diverse membership. www.mercedes-benz-club.co.uk
