I bought an 04 plate CLK500 a couple of weeks ago. Since picking it up, I have covered around 2,500 miles & continue to be very impressed with it.
There really are no areas that I am disappointed with. Granted, they are not as chuckable as some of their contemporaries, but there is something very addictive about having a 5L V8 up front. So far, I have averaged 25.1mpg since collecting it & I haven't been hanging around. Motorway runs at 90ish return around 28mpg.
The only thing I am thinking about doing is taking it to DMS for a re-map, as they take it to 346bhp & improve throttle response.
In summary, a great car.

May I suggest you tell your wife you have decided on a CLK55, after much wrangling you can let her talk you into a 500.

My wife has a 2003 CLK500 cab. It's only 5sp auto and only 306bhp (later ones are more I think).
It drives very nicely, smooth and quiet. Not very involving, but good for long distances.
MPG usually around 21 during 10mile mixed road commute but recently averaged 25mpg over 1700 mile tour from Poole, round Scotland and back. Fully loaded with passengers and luggage.
Speaking of luggage... it takes quite a lot of planning to fit a families gear into the boot and still get the hood down.
Speaking of the hood...it's been into the dealers 3 times already to get the hood working and it broke again this week (booked in for 4th time Thurs).
They've tried:
1) cleaning micro-switch
2) changing micro-switch
3) changing micro-switch no2
4) I'll let you know - I don't know how many micro-switches there are!?
Also, we don't find the heating very good for the back seat passengers. We sit roasting in the front and they barely get a warm breeze even with fans full on and all dash vents closed.
