Are these any good? Its seems like the best 4x4 for around £5000. I've heard things about poor build quality but for this price range there are not many alternatives with this much luxury.

And also how reliable are they?

I bought mine brand new on an 03 plate - had a number of problems for the first 6 months (including power steering failure while driving which I believe resulted in a recall) which were all rectified under warranty and MB fitted an in-car DVD player and chrome side bars as some form of compensation after I complained strongly....

Car is now 6 years old and has done 63,000 with no problems at all since then. IMHO it still looks quite presentable (black Inspiration model, chrome grill, side bars & ml500 wheels), does near as makes no odds 30mpg on a run, holds 7 people, has almost every extra and probably worth about £7-8k max! Front tyres last about 15k miles and my back ones did over 40k, apart from that had it serviced 4 times now (just done at 61k) and no major expenses so far I use a local specialist and last service cost under £300.

If you like the look of them, and shop around for a good one, I don't think you will get a more practical car for the money. And long term, Merc's do tend to hold their value better than BMW's so cheaper and a better buy than an X5!
