Quite a few years ago they had a slightly odd saying that was somthing like "nobody had been killed in a recent Merc other than in a catastrophic accident".

They had (may still have) a team based in the factory which flew to examine cars that had been involved in very serious accidents.

They came out to look at my old w124 estate when a car pulled out in to my path when I was doing 70. Took over 4 hours to cut the ocupents out and we just walked from ours and closed the road for 6 hours. I had a broken thumb and loads of bruises as did my wife, she also had a broken knee. My 12 month old daughter was fast a sleep in her car seat in the back and was completly unhurt. We hit the other car with such impact the differential came out of the back of the axle and the CD player disapeard into the centre consul and was still playing the Light House family.

I was going to comment about that...MB weren't very happy about that, to say the least, but it's widely thought that she'd have probably survived if she'd been wearing a seat belt. The fact that the car hit a fairly narrow pillar meant the front was able to gradually absorb the impact (rather than if it had just run straight into a wall) although the effect on belted in occupants of the car then spinning is difficult to predict.

In fact the most damaged part of the car was front right where the bodyguard was sitting (LHD car of course) and he was the only occupant wearing a seat belt and the only one who survived.
