I'm currently driving an E350cgi Coupe after having the cdi for a few months. I wasn't a big fan of the engine at first, much prefferd the delivery of the power and instant torque that the 350cdi gave you, but now it's got a couple of thousand miles under it's belt it's a completely different car; you do have to rev it quite hard, but the power is pretty impressive. It's also extremely refined and almost silent in the cabin on a decent stretch of motorway.
If I was given a choice between the petrol and diesel models though, I would choose the diesel. The amount of miles I drive makes filling up an all too common occurence in the petrol version and the refinement and extra power aren't worth the extra cost in fuel IMO.
I'm happy to answer any questions on either if there's anything speciic you need to know.

Leaning towards the diesel for the good torque of the 350, love the shape and looks, probably get an ex demo car, using for 30 mins drive each way A and B roads, family out with me from time to time (3 kids) smart for work, comfy but with a bit of poke to overtake the slow snails. (done the porsche and fast car things just want a comfy cruise in)
Avantgard or sport? dunno like the avantgard bits but want the pedels of the sport.

If it was my money I would go with the Sport; I prefer the look of the car with the AMG kit and wheels, and also like you mention the interior bits, for me I especially the white stitching on the seats. Buying as an ex-demo I don't think there will be huge disparity bewteen the prices of the Avantgarde and Sport models, so again this would push me in the direction of the Sport. If you like the black wood (standard on the Avantgarde), you can add this an option to the Sport. I think the car would be perfect for what you're looking to do with it; I drove our E350cdi demo for a month or so when my coupe was in for a software update that rendered the car useless!!
