lumpy tickover on 1992 CE230 - any thoughts?

My old CE230 has done 95,000 miles and, a couple of hundred miles ago, suddenly began to feel lumpy at tickover as if the tickover revs are not quite high enough. This still happens when the engine has warmed up. The car runs fine under load and pulls normally. My local garage mentioned that it could be a problem with the fuel mixture sensor causing it to run too rich, or maybe a problem with the catalytic convertor. The car was serviced about 3,000 mile ago and, to my relief, went through its MoT fine on Monday so presumably not affecting emissions etc.

Does anybody have any thoughts or experience of something similar?

Hi,
I've just cured similar symptoms on a 230te J reg.
Everything looked ok, and there was no adjustments to be made so I freed off the linkage to the throttle a bit, with wd40 then emptied a can of carb cleaner down it's throat (remove top of air pan, and filter, give it some revs and squirt it in)
Running beautifully now.
