Hi folks,
I know zero about Mercs but my dad has just driven a recent C-class and liked it very much. He's a keen driver and likes manual boxes but was impressed with the auto box. He's in the market for a decent 4 seat convertible with a decent sized boot. He's a Saab man but was unimpressed with the 9-3 vert, and doesn't like the Beemer image.
He's looking at 6-8k ish on a CLK 230 Kompressor.
What's the deal with these and Merc's quality control issues? His neighbour had an E-class which had all the arches replaced under warranty at about 5 years old

We looked at getting one a couple of years ago - then practicality struck - needed an estate for an extra dog.
Having spoken to my specialist he said from his experience there were no major pitfalls.
Providing I still have access to some storage its certainly a car I want to add as a summer toy.

Quality control?
Zero faults other than the dash pixels in ten years, just required routine maintenance.
No rust.
I have loved mine so much i have bought another!

check the boot locks - rust like buggery although will be repaired under warranty by mercedes as it was a manufacturing fault.
As before - pixels in dash alawys go.
Had a few electrical gremlins on our 2001 200K cab, but still a lot better than the 98 9-3 cab it replaced - doesn't squeak and rattle half as much!

I got one in June last year, 2001 230K, Avantgard, leather, full Merc service history, 42,000 miles, £2,500, (not a typo error). No problems, took it to our villa in Spain in Sept, returned it to the UK in Dec. Averaged 42mpg both ways, (6 speed manual). Returning to UK in two weeks time, where we will use it as our UK car, (Merc A class as Spanish car). Just had son-in-law star it up, i.e. it has been static for three months. Battery was flat, and the usual problems about getting access to the battery when it has been disconnected, and the boot has been shut, oops. There is a fix, jump start link under the bonnet. All in all, a good car, comfortable, 200BHP, economical on a long run.
