Merc E class 320d estate, a wise move??

All, i have posted similar in GG, does anyone run one of these, and if so, could you give me any pointers to a potential purchase?
What can i expect MPG to be in everyday use- i never seem to achieve the figures that most people get, so hoping for a realistic figure from an owner

Jeez, not happy enough with the new Roadster, you need a Merc too! 
I run the smaller engined 2008 E220cdi estate and the same year/model/spec as the MX-5 discussed in your other thread, and for me they're a dream 2 car combo - a comfy leisurely automatic cruiser with a huge boot and a manual rwd roadster with a proper soft top.
I do mostly short motorway runs and town driving in the E-Class and struggle to get anywhere near the book figures, 35mpg overall on a tank if I'm lucky, that said, I never, ever, get less than 30mpg overall, even with a very heavy right foot, cold winter starts and all of the toys switched on.
Mine has had a few niggles, all electrical gremlins, but nothing that makes me regret buying the car, a great all rounder IMO.

The MX is for mrs emsman, which leaves us with a (very lovely) ranger classic for any long journeys, which is somewhat thirsty. Coupled with the return to work, it makes for quite a costly time coming up, unless i can get shot and into something more frugal. I did look at a c class estate, but the bigger boot will always be worth it with a 4 year old son and a dog (perhaps) arriving soonish
I have the saloon and wish I had got the estate for the space and the dogs. I have never got less than 33MPG and on the motorway where most of my miles are done it returns 43+MPG, up to 50 on one trip through that long 50mph section on the M1.
I have only had it 18 months but wont be letting it go any time soon.
