Hi,
After owning a BMW e39 535 for a while (which I really like) I think that I have been defeated by Gordon Brown and it's time to get a more economical car as this averages about 23mpg. With my wife I have owned an SLK 200 in the past, so I am familiar with Mercedes as a brand, and she now has a Boxster so my car is only really a commute to work and back (about 12K per year) or to use if we go away for a weekend as the 2 seater roadsters are never that comfy on long journeys! I have been searching for a manual £4-£5K c class in estate or saloon form but it seems you can get the coupe a fair bit cheaper. I never really liked the style of the coupe but it has grown on me, especially because of the apparent value for money. So my question is can I expect to acheive 40-45 mpg fro the C220cdi with town but mostly motorway driving if I take it easy?
Thanks

I bought a Merc AUC which come with quite a good warranty. I've had a floor shift mechanism and the dash pod replaced without hestitation under it. I'd buy a post 2004 model as the rear lights and interior are updated which I think look much better.
Mine has a slight klunk from the near side front suspension when cold and reversing out of the drive on full lock which is the tie rods or drop link I've been told, it's quite common apparently.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was hoping for between 35-45 so it seems it's bang on the money. Any notorious issues to look out for if buying one?
Mrs Orb(s) gets 40mpg pretty well dead on - that's over thousands of miles mixed use - C220CDi Sportcoupe auto.Really nice little car - however in your 4-5K price range you are going to be in the dreaded rust territory. Mrs Orb(s) is a 2002 model that is looked after and lives under cover. I am just sorting new front wings for it and attention to the other scabs. The rust problem cannot be overemphasised on these - it's shocking!

The facelift coincided with an improvement in quality.
I have no problem with the car in general - it's lovely. It's just the rusty wings! And back on topic - just been Rochdale - Leeds - Manchester Airport - Rochdale both two and four occupants and suitcases and got an average 51mpg

hi ive just bought a c 220 cdi coupe fuel gauge was at a third so i filled to the top diesel cost 50 quid ,so far it went down to the 2/3rds mark at 142 miles so between that and what i fot it at i hope it will get the 4 hundread odds to that fifty quid, fuel gauge says usualy 44. motorway crept up to 48 , but this is not average conssuption, i noticed unlike my other cars ,so how do merc do it calculating it so pesice.and i find that driving this car it just wofts alone so im never speeding and revs are never over 2k, hope this helps.
