R170 Warning Lamps

Hi,

I have a 2000 SLK 320, and am have a problem with the warning lamps.

On inserting the key and turning it to the driving position (without starting the engine), all of the warning lamps come on. The SRS lamps goes back out after a few seconds, but all of the others remain on. The car will start, and the warning lamps will then go off, and it drives fine, no apparent problems. This only started happening a couple of days ago without any obvious cause.

Anyone know why all the warning lamps are coming on?

I checked my SLK32 this morning and all the lights stay on except the SRS light and then they go off once the engine starts.

This is normal operation.

Now you are worrying as to why they used to go off aren't you

If it starts, stops and sounds OK and no lights come on relax and enjoy the car especially with today's roasting 17 degrees

Posts such as this drive me nuts!
Why do car manufacturers put Owner's Manuals in their cars? Because they expect you to read them at least once. These are not cheap to prepare. Even if you buy a car used you can get them on the net.
All the lights coming on when the ignition key is turned to the pre start position is a self check process to verify that all the idiot lights that should come on when there is a malfunction are working and with the exception of the SRS light will go out on engine start.
The SRS light comes on, the system does a self diagnosis to verify all the sensors that should be working are working and then shuts off the SRS light even before you start the engine.
It is all covered in the owner's manual and has in all 7 MB cars I have owned.

But all else didn't fail. He asked on the interweb and got the answer he needed. So he was right not to RTFM
