I've just got rid of my Boxster 3.2s in preference for something more economical that I can get a mountain bike into and I'm looking at some C220 CDI's.

What's high mileage for Merc diesels and what tends to go wrong? i.e what should I be looking for in the service history to have been done - stuff I'm looking at ranges from 55k to 85k miles.

Thanks for any help

Mrs Orb(s) C220CDi SportCoupe has 136K on the clock now. Its a panoramic roof Evo and the only things to look out for are rust (it's a 2002) and knocking front suspension joints IME. The suspension is actually very easy and cheap to sort - I went mad last year and replaced a lot of stuff - totally clunk free car now. Bits from Dronsfields.

The interior of her car is like brand new. Newer models won't have the rust problems so you should be fine.

The Mrs 220CDi (2005) had 110k on it and was like new with no problems throughout her ownership. Really quite a good car and we both much preferred it to the Audi it was replaced with.

I think Merc's of any age are just run in at 100k, especially diesels.

If you do average miles a year (12k) i'd say a Merc with 60k is low mileage (unless its a 59 plate!)

My first E class 220CDi did 320k miles without any major problems in just over 3 yrs and my current one has done 195k in 2 yrs, again with no major problems. As lons as you get them serviced properly and on time they will do big miles.

Thanks all. Interesting stuff but academic as I've bought a 320d instead. Fingers crossed on the swirl flaps!
