The battery went flat in my 2000 Mercedes SL500 (R129).
Now the remote control part of the key doesn't operate the central locking.

I replaced the batteries in the key and tried different methods of coding it to the car.
Nothing works.

There is an infra-red receiver in the door, no lights in the interior mirror.
Anyone know the answer?

The 1st thing to check would be the batteries.

To remove batteries, unfold key from holder by pressing lock button. Pull off battery cover.

Change batteries with Lithium, type CR2025 or equivalent by inserting new ones under contact spring, with plus side facing up.

Press battery cover onto housing until locked in place.

Test all buttons on remote.

If Remote still does not function, it may have to be resynchronized after changing batteries.

copied from manual:

To synchronize the remote control (from the 2000 manual):

Synchronizing remote control
The system may have to be resynchronized, if the
transmitter is without voltage for several minutes.
To synchronize system, aim transmitter eye at vehicle
and briefly press transmit button (Lock) or (Unlock) twice.
Within approximately 30 seconds insert key in steering lock and turn it to position 2.
The remote control should once again be operational.

Check all functions

hope this is of some help ?

Thank you for your help.
Unfortunately I tried this and it didn't work.

I've also tried just about every combination of this and every other method of coding I have found, but unfortunately nothing.

Ah well, next step my local dealer. Thanks again.
