Anyone got some info on NGK or Bosch aftermarket items?

Have found references on Benzworld but they are fur USA derivatives with US numbers, cant find any info for euro side.

Is there a good UK forum for Mercedes specific I can do a search on?

Try calling GSF - they will a) know which ones and b) sell you them at much cheapness. They will also know if the original plug has a newer revision - certainly true of my plugs.

I got mine (which I dare say are the same) for 57 quid from GSF. Bosch Platinum/Iridium FR8DPP332 16x3.60 it sez here.

The thing that is actually hardest is getting the plug caps off the tops of the plugs - there is a special tool from MB, although I made one.

Get in garage, *take your time* (suggest a bottle of wine to help you along smile) and job done.

(I found that having the right sockets also made the job a doddle - set of quality 3/8 sockets with various size extensions and a UJ - don't think I could have done it without).

I used a big Britool open one end, rig the other end spanner. Might have been a 3/4" but I'd need to check down my garage. I put a handy bend in it iirc. There are various instructions on the web on how to make one.

(this was for an SL500 - I don't know how much an SL55 would differ)

fitted original NGK items hence the £ difference.

All done, relatively easy by TVR standards, used a long 16mm open spanner to prise off the caps, magnetic plug socket 3/8 drive with 2" ext bar was all that was needed.

A pleasant surprise after reading the nightmare stories, thx for the heads up Dog smile

Excellent!
I really don't know where MB get off with their prices - I've got the quote somewhere in my service history and I'm sure it was GBP697 - absolutely outrageous.

Please excuse the novice question, but how do I know when my SL55 plugs need changing? My car is a 2002 model and is still on the original plugs. I had it serviced by MB until 2008, now with independents, and all say "the plugs are fine, leave them" but can plugs really last 8+ years without needing replacement???!

well ours is 2004, 90k miles and we were advised (srongly) at last service to cange them due to age and mileage, they were knackered and car runs much smoother now. HTH
