Hi I have recently bought a 190E 2.0 litre and I'm generally very pleased with it. Just this weekend it's developed a tapping sound which varies with engine speed, it's only really noticeable under acceleration and over 2000rpm. At steady speed and overrun it's not there.
Any ideas?

I can't think what would make a tapping noise on a 190E apart from the hydraulic tappets. If they make any noise they are normally noisy at startup, and then the noise goes away, but on some cars they are noisy all the time

You need to find where the noise is coming from. If the noise is there when revving the engine at a standstill you can rule out wheel bearings, diff & propshaft. If it's only there on the move then it is post-gearbox

Hi Nick,
Thanks for your response, I'm pretty sure it's engine speed related but only occurs when on the move and only when engine speed is increasing. Could it possibly be a noisy injector? I know this is a long shot.

Could be the cam chain tensioner, if you cant hear it on the over-run.

If it's only when on the move, and when accelerating, then I'd take a wild guess and say the centre prop bearing is knackered

The other possibility is soft/failed engine mounts that are allowing the engine to move about. I've replaced engine mounts on quite a few 190Es recently
