E Class Cab & tyres

Hi,
Not long had my E class cab (2010 model) and I have to say I am finding the grip on cold mornings really bad. Having come from a BMW thats saying something!
I have 17" wheels and I am thinking of putting some winter tyres on - I felt the back end sliding a couple of times this morning (and I'm a pretty gentle driver) so god knows what it will be like when the really harsh weather kicks in.
Does anyone know if 16" wheels will fit or have any advise for aftermarket alloys (other model Merc wheels seconsd hand?) that I could fit - ideally want to keep the original wheel and tyres together for when the weather improves.
