c200 cdi auto - shocking MPG, HELP ?!

Hi All,

Only had the C200cdi auto estate for a few days but have done a few trips.

The car is a 2006 "55"
104k - full MB history
Auto
Estate

These are my findings:

40 miles shopping trip, 30 miles of motorway driving at 70mph
10 miles around the town and in car parks etc

Trip computer shows 31mpg

140 mile motorway cruise at 70mph

Trip computer showed 39mpg

Now I have only done 190 miles and it seems my tank only has half left!!!

At this rate I will have ran out before even 400 miles.....on one tank and this is driving like miss daisy.

Is this normal?

The update:

The story gets worse!

I've been to Kent and back a 200 mile return journey.

I drove at 70 mph all the way, the motorways were clear and the local driving was no more than 15 miles.

So basically this tank has been 85% motorway and 15% town driving.

The tank has given me 390miles !!!

Yikes !!!

My brothers x5 diesel is much better....there has to be something wrong......?!?!?!?!?

Please help, I'm a new owner and need to know what to check and where to check?

I had a C200CDI auto as a loaner (59 reg). Less than 30mpg with only gentle prodding, about 4mpg better than my SLK350 for the same journey. Big car, small engine and an old autobox, I suspect. Not good.

Found the problem.

The car was up to operating temp in town but as soon as I got the the motors would drop to 65......I will be getting this changed at the weekend.

Don't expect miracles, though. The OH has a C220CDi SportCoupe thing and the average mpg on that over many many thousands of miles is 39mpg.

I'd expect worse mpg from a bigger, heavier estate with a smaller engine.

I had a s204 C220 CDI (SE spec) as a loaner last week. I did 180miles in it. I reset the trip computer when I got in it and drove pretty much like a granny, mainly long distances on dual carriageways but with a bit of lightly-trafficked town routes. I was very disappointed to manage only about 34.5mpg. The service chap who gave me the car had warned me I would be disappointed by the economy figures.

I suspect the engines are tuned to pass the emissions tests with flying colours rather than to give real-world economy.

I did find it to be an utterly awful car overall. The "Sport" models must be all but undriveable.

34.5mpg is pretty terrible considering I got nearly 30mpg out of my R129 SL500 on a long run (also driving like a granny for once!)

I've always quite liked the looks of these but have never drive one. As someeone with undoubted good taste in cars , Why did you think it was so terrible?

Chris, the best I have had out of my SL500 is 29mpg and that was over 450miles with the cruise control set at 95mph almost all of the way. I regularly get 25 to 27mpg.

I have emailed you with my thoughts on the C-Class. They're not my cup of tea but they certainly seem to be very popular.

I've got a 2009 CLK 220 CDi Auto. It averages around 34 mpg, drops to 28 mpg on commute, best I've had was 47 mpg on motorway run at dead on 70mph.

Not at all impressed by mpg, I queried this at first service and got the usual reply of 'they all do that, sir'.

Mpg is far worse than the 2.0TDi Audi I had before and the 2.0 petrol BMW before that.

Petrol next time for me given the premium on diesel at both the dealer and the pump.

Heavy cars and old fashioned auto 'boxes (compared to the latest 'boxes from BMW) with a small engine really isn't great for economy.

I have an E320cdi and I see 31mpg round town, 34.8 over the last 20k miles and 40 on a long run at speed, can see 46 on a steady 70mph cruise.

Every loan E220cdi I have been lent has performed worse. I am sure alot of it is to do with gearing more than anything else.
I had a new 520d with the 8 speed sports auto box the other day and that was amazing, 38mpg across the city from cold and averaged 44mpg on the day, reset that at 75mph an it is doing 57mpg, that eighth gear really helps those that do alot of motorway miles.

I have just got the wife a C220cdi Estate Sport Manual... 400 miles on the clock & it's returning 41mpg on the school run ( 40mile round trip, country roads all the way ) . This should improve once we get some miles on the clock.

As a comparison, the merc replaced a 58plate BMW 120d Msport & this was getting around 43mpg on the same run. Our old ( 56 plate) Audi A4 2.0 tdi ( 170 ) used to average about 38mpg.

If I do the school run in my 320 ML I'm getting around 28mpg.

The c220 might not have exceptional fuel economy, but for me it's similar to the other german with the same spec engine

I agree with this. I ran an identical car and averaged 38mpg over 40k miles, with the majority of miles on the motorway, so would expect a larger car to be slightly worse.

I ran a (E90?) BMW 320d for 35,000miles and averaged just over 38mpg. Not driving like a nun, but mainly long distance commuting.

I have an E350 CDI on loan this week and it is returning amazing mpg. Last night over 12miles of country roads at a leisurely (but not slow) pace, it gave 48.7mpg door to door. This morning, over 30miles of very heavy traffic, with five minutes stood idling to warm up, it gave 43.5mpg. It is a superb car (although the suspension is far too stiff).

i've just filled up for the second time after purchasing my c220 cdi estate.the trip was only showing 380 miles after a £75 fill up!
i was getting 300 miles for a £55 fill up in my 4.0ltr tvr!
very dissapointed with economy.

Is the engine running at the correct temperature?

It seems to sit just below 80c. Thermostat?
Interestingly,the 220 is supposed to be more efficient than the 200 according to my manual.
