Pretty much the same car as the E55 underneath...

From an E46 M3, if you've driven the E55 you'll know how big the difference in performance is!

Don't expect it to handle anywhere near as well though.

Also, fuel is not great... neither are running costs... if that is a concern, then maybe it's not the car for you?

It's been a while since I had mine, so sorry I can't help with specific costs.. but as mentioned a quick call around a couple of MB dealers will be your best bet for prices.

To add, I would suspect your E39 M5 would have been far better on fuel than the 55K AMG engined cars. An extra .4 litres, supercharged, and auto box combined with rediculous low end torque baiting you to put your foot down at every opportunity will see to that.

8 mpg to the nursery and 21 ave.....

Im drawn to AMG after driving a C63 AMG - i know not the same and really a newer M5 would be on the cards but that seems to drink more than any of them....

CLS the wife likes the shape......id have the cheaper E55 but seems that shes not too hot on the sort of square looks....

thanks for the feedback - anyone else let me know cheers...

CLS 55 AMG a fabulous car. The owners say the 55K's (E's or CLS's) cost a bit more to run that the regular ones (brakes, tyres, fuel).

The facelift 500 might also be worth a look - 386 bhp.

Ask the question over at MBclub.co.uk and get a more detailed answer.

Hiya, I actually came from a e46 M3 to an sl55 last year. I know the sl55 is not what you are interested in but the engine, performance, maintenance won't be far off a cls55.

If I'm honest I did notice a significant difference in mpg even from the reasonably thirsty M3. Town driving average will always be 12-14mpg, with motorway average 15-17mpg. Also these cars are filled to the brim with all sorts of sensors etc and general maintenance costs were higher even for the low mileage 29k car I bought. Hence consider a warranty or get to know a merc indy specialist very well. Otherwise tyres/brakes/oil etc very similar to M3 prices.

Performance wise you definitely feel the difference mainly as torque is twice what was in the M3 and available at low revs - the acceleration feels much more urgent. Anything other than bone dry however and you cannot let the car rip to the maximum without some sliding/twiching. The M3 was better in this respect. Also the engine note immediately after buying the car was a tad dissapointing for me compared to the M3 and so I made some changes to the exhaust like removing resonator/silencers and this made a world of difference.

Seriously?

A standard SL55 makes a standard M3 sound like a milk float!

re: exhaust noise sl55 compared to M3

Yeh tbh I was expecting more as stock,

I think it may have been more because I had ultra high expectations of the sl55, hence i was expecting even more grunt and noise from the 5.4 supercharged V8! Remember that these exhausts have 4 silencers and primary+secondary cats so a lot of the beautiful roar of the V8 is contained as such.

One thing is for certain though as I have a close friend who owns an e55 and there is an obvious difference in exhaust note between the sl55 and e55/cls55. I think although the engine is of course the same, the exhaust in each is different in set-up, so even more muted in the e55/cls55.

The poster stated he had already driven an e55 and so I'm sure accounted for the differences in this respect, and I think exhaust note is probably not something everyone will have an issue about I suppose. Oh well just my two cents worth anyway!

Bottom line is that for the ridiculous amount of grunt and for the fact that the 55 cars can be picked up now relatively cheap (approx 15-20k;) the extra running costs are in my opinion worth it as long as they have been accounted for - at a guess prob on average 3k extra per yr might be what you'll pay if you average 10k miles in the car like I do-this is what it cost me in petrol+maintenance extra over the M3.

I loved the sound of the SL55 I drove, which I beleive was standard (main dealer car).

Maybe becuase it was everything I wished my E55 sounded like. I have had an E36 M3 with a de-cat supersprint system, and my cousin has an E46 M3 and IMO the SL55 sounds much louder and nicer than both.
