I've gone out to the car this morning to go to work and having unlocked ok I put the key in the ignition and the dasboard display went out. The car is now completely dead - key won't turn so it's stuck in park and it won't lock either.

Does anyone have any ideas ?

You could help us to help you by stating the year and model of your car.

Yes a bit of extra detail probably might help!

It's a 2000 CLK 3.2 Avantgarde Auto

Problem sorted - there was a poor connection on the positive terminal on the battery! All fixed with a 10mm spanner.
