W140. It looks like absolute diplomatic porn.

In terms of which I'd most like to own however, a W221 shape S55 AMG with most of the options ticked. I could sit on the most infinitely boring and characterless stretch of road for days and not get fed up with it.

W126.
Totally bulletproof build quality and timeless looks. Classic and modern at the same time.

Agree on the W221 thing though! I have a fully specced LWB model S320 CDI and would never get bored of it. Awesome place to be when mile munching.

W140

Built like a tank. Over-engineered. Cost more to build than could be sold for.

A W126 560SEL in BlueBlack Metalic with the contrasting bumpers and door trims, sitting on a set of 'period' 17" Lorinser wheels would be in my dream garage....

I would have to say the W140 too.

There is just a certain 'something' when you get into it unlike the later W220 which felt 'cheap' even though it was actually very well put together (as an aside, I could not believe how rubbish the trim and feel of the new Lexus GS was like at Geneva Show).

I feel a need to be standing out the sunroof of the W140 when driving, shouting commands of "Traverse left...sorry, turn left" to the driver

The W109(?) from the 60s is my favourite, specifically the 300SEL 6.3.

But this is second:

I have a W126, but prefer the style of the W116. Lighter and airier looking, and just a bit more elegant. Ideally with the 6.9 engine of course...

I like all of them, however the W140 is my favourite closely followed by the W126

I also really like the current S-Class, seems to be a return to form, but found some of the switchgear felt a little cheap compared to my W140, in particular the electric seat switches felt like they belonged on a matsui hi-fi.

They look like the chrome rubbish you would get in 1980's Nissans. They also look like they were design for a different car as they don't match the inside at all.

Got the be the W126 for me, followed VERY closely by the W116. The W116 seem to sort of be the forgotten S-class, but such a stunning car!

I find the W140 is a bit too "fat", and not as elegant as previous models IMO, though probably nicer to drive I would imagine. Still a nice car though.

I don't really care for the newer ones!

I must say the W140 - it's the only S Class that I've driven, and I think they offer superb value for money, well initial purchase price anyway. Servicing and running cost still high.

Although I have been in a W126 Carat Duchatelet - which was nice.

Any W116/126 or 140.
On a budget I'd opt for a W126 500SE. Otherwise if costs in general are not an issue it would have to be W116 450SEL 6.9 or a W140 V12. Still a good, a well spec'ed W126 300SE should not be sniffed at.

I would go for either a W116 450SEl 6.9 ( a permenant fixture in my 10-car fantasy garage), a W126 500SE or, if I wanted a daily driver, a W220. I had one of these for 4 years and it was just awesome and achingly beautiful to look at
