I'm going to look at one of these tomorrow - what should I be looking out for? 130,000 miles....

Service history is everthing with these car's. The cambelt should have been changed at least once by now and will need re doing if its only just had the one change. Get yourself onto the FCCUK forum and print of the buyers guide in the coupes for sale section. Everthing you need to know about Coupe's is on that forum. Good luck.

Tried that - the information on buying and selling is in a private thread, and attempt to register for the forums was declined...... Obviously I don't pass muster frown

Drove one today - properly quick, I was impressed. Shame the brakes didn't work eek

The handling struggles to cope but they are fabulous little cars, surprisngly practical too. I've had two & the 1st one only needed a temp sensor, the 2nd blew a turbo but that was probably poor maintenance by a previous owner.

The brakes should work OK, but they aren't the most reassuring in terms of feel. Only problem with the brakes I have had is that the front flexis deteriorate and then if you brake on full lock the brake stays on until the lock is wound off.

Folk get more hung up on the cambelt than they need to I think. Check it is in decent nick if you can, but don't reject an otherwise sound car if it's not been done in the last 15 minutes as people seem to think is necessary.

Some of them like a drink of oil, so worth checking that it gets checked fairly regularly and looks fairly clean on the dipstick.

I've had one for almost 3 years and bar a few electrical gremlins coming from dry solder at the back of the fusebox it's been reliable.

Notice your profile says Scotland, so if you are around Edinburgh you're welcome to have a poke round mine as a comparison.

If it's got to 130k then chances are it's a decent one.

I was humming and ha'ing about buying one last year - just acquired a 2nd 2 seater convertible, so looking at selling the Alfa and buying something slightly more practical.

Found these threads then:

that had loads and loads of useful advice on them.

My cheap shed of a 20vt has just done a faultless 330 miles today btw.

This chap didn't think much of it though.

Had a sunny day off so set myself the challenge of an interesting route on one tank of fuel.

You can have a lovely day out in a grand's worth of crappy old fiat and 50 notes worth of fuel. biggrin

As already stated, buy on service history and not low mileage/shiny paint. A car that likes to be driven and will easily do high mileages as along as the servicing isn't neglected.

Mine just turned 120k over the weekend and hasn't missed a beat in nearly 4 years of ownership...

Mine had an unknown service history, although the most recent owner did seem keen enough.
It's not been 100% faultless, but most of it has been related to a single electrical gremlin which has now been ousted.

do these cars rust much|? - Galvanised, being a special Fiat? - I would have thought 15 yr old Fiats would normally succumb to the tin worm if not galvanised

Really keen on swotting up on 20vts and mods but still cant get on FCCUK site - the suggestion of dumping my complete store of passwords in browser cache is not exactly practical - unfortunately I have not kept a separate list.

Drove one a longtime ago and quite liked it - prodded throttle on a bluflamed one today (induction kit and better turbo) without being loud, it sounded wonderful inside and out - cant wait to drive and hear it on boost.

Where & when is best place to mix in a Coupe gathering to discuss mods and prepare for buying? - Preferably Midlands.

Really keen on getting one if it drives anywhere near as well as it sounds - that is coming from a Griff and STi PPP fan!

Try opening FCCUK with Firefox, for some reason the site has problems with Explorer. Plenty of info and a nice crowd.

Rust can be an issue, but no worse than most other cars of a similar age.

There is a low mileage 1 owner car for sale on fleabay at the moment ( nothing to do with me btw ) do your research first though.

Plenty of specialists in your neck of the woods too.

You have mail re viewing the website.

Where abouts are you based? Mine is currently at Midlands Car Services just off junction 23 of the M1.

Motormech in Birmingham is also highly regarded within FCCUK circles, along with FCSS at Winslow.

A bit further south and you have Solo italia in Kidlington, Oxfordshire.

TBH the midlands is well catered for in terms of specialists.... Git! biggrin
