I am looking into buying a 147 to use as a daily commuter - mostly motorway miles.

I have a gentle right foot - will I be able to get 40mpg on a smooth 60mph run over 70 miles?

Conscious that the 147 is not THE ideal commuter but I can not face sitting in a diesel Golf or Skoda every day? biggrin

With the diesel, no problem.

Petrol - you'll be seriously struggling. Best I can get out of my 2 litre twin spark is 34 mpg and that's seriously nursing it. 1.6 won't be much better.

From memory I got mid 30's out of my 1.6 in normal driving - and I'm pretty gentle. Diesel would be your best bet!

My 1.6 did early 30s, and that was with mostly careful driving, at 60mph, with the odd bit of right foot on rare occasions. I very much doubt you can nurse a Twin Spark to 40mpg.
