Hey folks, have a little hankering for one of these and wouldn't mind some info on them.

Is there a buyers guide recommended, any common faults to watch out for? How well do they handle?

I'm assuming the 24V is the one to go for?

Any links to s/c'd or modified examples?

Cheers,
Olie

Try over on alfaowner.com there's a buyers guide and section there. I have one. Normal stuff really, Cambelts need changing every 4 years to be safe. Clutches are expensive to replace. Front wishbones are a consumable item. Can be a money pit so buy wisely. Handling is ok. Steering is a bit too light and the rear bushes do wear out but this is not as bad as on the 2.0 twinspark models. Wipers can be a pain as THEY decide when they want to work.

I average around 25mpg now but thats on long journeys. Torquey engine doesn't need to be thrashed for good progress-but the noise when you do is intoxicating. Brakes are good but can feel wooden. Some parts are expensive. REd cars can fade to pink. Well put together and mine doesn't have any rattles or squeaks in the cabin. Finally, if you are tall the view is restricted and you may need to remove the sun visors.

"Teledial" wheels look the "dogs" but are not on the all V6 cars. most have 6 speed gearboxes and rear spoilers too. Cup cars are sought after but are mechanically the same.

Good luck.

As Jack says, go on AO, full 916 section there, buy on condition and receipts not price and miles,i picked up my mint '99' in red with the aero kit and wheels low miles and 12 months mot for £2000.....on one run of 530 miles i got almost 36mpg (god it was boring)

shame i wrote it off the day i put it on the road, cost more to repair than the purchase price, i had a 2.0 as well, perfect but the noise and urge of the V6 is the clincher

  • Cambelts are scheduled officially at 72k/5yrs. People in the know change them much sooner, be thinking more like 48k/4yrs. Changing the water pump and all pulleys/idlers/tensioners etc at the same time is vital.
  • Wishbones are terribly weak. Ideally look for one with Powerflexed rear suspension. Much more robust and longer lasting.
  • Standard diffs are supposedly weak and can potentially take the gearbox out with them if they fail. Mine was absolutely fine but there's plenty of stories out there. One with an upgraded Q2 differential will be necessary if this worries you.
Other than that, there's nothing to worry about. They're great cars with a legendary engine. Handling is very good, they do lack that ultimate polish and chassis composure but you'll be having too much fun listening to the Alfa V6 howl to care.
