I'm considering purchasing an Alfa 166 3.0 V6 but the ad comments on the 'mass air flow meter deteriorating'. Not sure how you know it is deteriorating, i thought you would just get an error light on the dash until the car stopped.

Is this common ?
Is it an expensive fix ?
Is there an easy bodge to fix it ?
Is there some way to get an exchange/guaranteed part ?

Should I risk buying a 1999 77K mile Alfa 166 ??!! (I know the answer to this - I want to).

Common, yes. Expensive? ish - think they're about £100 or so. Likely to show up through poor idling, poor fuel consumption and generally poor running.

Personally, I'd buy another one. There's a good number about. If you can hang on a bit, I bet the one that you're after will be readvertised as being sorted.

Hi there

I recently had the AFM replaced on my 166. The ALFA part is around £180 and very easy to fit. It does not require any adjustment and simply fits in place of old one. OEM Bosch versions are avail on eBay for around £30/40. I suspect it is the same part in every way.

I remember seeing on alfaowner.com forum a discussion about this. It lists the bosch p/n for just the sensor part and it wasn't expensive at all, if you have a search there I'm sure it'll turn up. Plus you'll also find a lot of other good info about the 166.

My advice would be to make sure it has a FULL service history which it should have with such low mileage. In the engine, make sure the cambelt has been changed at correct intervals. Also check for any signs of overheating which can quickly buckle the head etc.
Check for suspension squeaks when going over bumps as the front suspension bushes are prone as are the engine mounts. Of course all of these are standard checks for a car of this age. Properly serviced they are wonderful car imho. They are also very low to the ground and easily grounded over speed bumps etc so check the engine floor cover for cracks. There is a cheap pack to raise the suspension........or you could just drive slower.

Anyway, something to think about.

I have a 166 3.0 Sportronic Lusso. Beautiful. Effortless cruising if a little thirsty.... ;-)

This happened to my old 156 V6 - the MAF sensor on its way out initially begins with an almost undetectable hunting on idle, before getting progressively worse. When its just about had it, fuel economy drops through the floor, and there will be quite a large flat spot somewhere in the rev range. Mine manifested at about 4k revs. When the difference in the car's behaviour became more noticeable, I got a MAF sensor on order and by the time it had arrived from Alfa the car was virtually undriveable unless the sensor was unplugged.

The plus point is that they're an absolute piece of cake to fit, and it certainly doesn't suggest the car hasn't been looked after. Its a fairly common fault. Best of luck in your search.
