I've recently started doing a long 100 mile daily commute from the south coast into Surrey. While my current Cooper S has served me well my fuel bills are making me think I need a nice diesel!

I've always liked the 159, and would rather have something a little bit special rather than a generic BMW or VW. I've heard some horror stories about the fuel economy of the Alfa diesels, and was wondering what sort of mileage people get from the 1.9 in the real world? My journey is pretty much all A-roads so a steady 50-60mph.

Thanks in advance!

I've got a 159 1.9 Diesel and on a long journey such as what you describe I'd quite easily hit an indicated average 53MPG smile Often with the driving I was doing from February to Mid November I'd be spending a lot of time on motorways driving from the south to the midlands and further north. I'd get according to the trip 750 miles to a tank which I was very happy with coming from a V6! I've covered 26k miles since owning the car from February this year! From a speed perspective I'll hold my hands up and say I drove slightly over the 'limit', when within the average speed camera zones in road works the MPG would really soar high so I'm sure you'll get a good result smile The same engine is in the Saab 9-3 if you want a cheaper diesel option just make sure your getting the 150 wink

Mine was remapped from the word go, up to 180bhp. I averaged 37mpg thrashing it silly on country roads ( which represented about 80% of my driving) over 40mpg on a half sensible run. If I was sensible with the throttle I could get 50mpg....but it was so much fun I generally nailed it everywhere

I've been thinking about doing this to mine, I guess you just went for the remap and not the DPF removal and straight through replacement?

Yes I was selling remaps at the time, I used the Alfa as my demo car. I got 180 bhp and 304 Nm of torque on a rolling road. I left the air filter and exhaust alone. If you have the chance just buy one, I was still looking over my shoulder as I walked away from it a year after I got it. Brilliant cars, and all that went wrong in two years and twenty k of thrashing was a headlamp bulb

I'm curious, what horror stories have you heard?

Probably referring to 2.4 159s which average 30-35mpg until you start playing about with them and you can get 45+

Yeah that's more or less it to be honest. Looking through the Alfa forums there seem to be lots of complaints about high-30's low-40's mpg. I get 37mpg from my current Cooper S and I drive that like I stole it... I borrowed an A3 1.9 the other day and that gave 56mpg on the same route at roughly the same pace, it's just really dull. I love the 159 but it wouldn't really make sense for me unless I'm getting 45-55 mpg :/

I do a 55 mile journey each way to work.

Untill my recent 72000 mile service I was averaging 41mpg, after the service I now get 45/46mpg

standard 1.9JTDM, driven fast'ish all the time. 1/3rd A roads, 1/3rd B roads, 1/3rd Motorway.
