159 DPF and EGR bypass
Discussion
Hi All
I currently have a GT 1.9 diesel, which doesn't have the dreaded DPF fitted.
I now need a bigger car, and have been looking at diesel 159 estates.
Can anyone advise on how wise it would be to get the DPF deleted on these, and have the EGR bypassed? If an easy enough job, would it be best to go for either the 1.9 or the 2.4 engine in the first instance? Is the process the same for both?
Will this procedure also affect the 'legal status' of the car?
Finally, any ideas on price, and the best people to do it? I live in Bucks, and have had cars serviced with Autolusso in the past. I can't find any details of this type of work on their website, though.
Cheers
Phil.

Friend of mine had his 2.4 159 Sportwagon remapped and the DPF removed by AlfaAid in Maidenhead and is very pleased with the results - think it is now up to 260 BHP and he says the MPG is a bit better too.
I guess the 1.9 can benefit from similar treatment but dont personally know of anyone who has had this done.

Just spoke to Adrian at AlfaAid, who seems to know a lot about this. Looking like £600 all in (for either engines), which includes DPF removal, remap, and EGR bypass. Only downside, he says, is potential clutch wear due to increased torque, if you happen to mess the left peddle around in an unwise fashion on a regular basis.
Off to look at 159's now....

sorry for semi hijack, but why bypass the egr? I too have a 1.9 gt and whilst there's plenty of talk of doing it, there's little talk of why. Is it just because they can become troublesome, or is there a performance or economy benefit?
As I understand it, instead of throwing all the spent fumes out the back, the EGR recircs a portion back in the engine. It helps emissions, but your car is essentially breathing bad air. Like farting under a duvet, and keeping your head under, I guess. By remapping, the valve can be turned off, so none of the spent fumes get recirced back in. I think it also eliminates a lot of the gunk that builds up as a result.Correct, did this to my wifes rover 75 cdti, there is a valve that is vacuum operated and opens the exhaust air into the inlet duct but this valve gets filthy, sticks and causes other issues. Also the valve takes up about 20% of the area of the inlet tube so less air gets sucked in and what air does is full of soot. where's the logic in that? I ask you!
Bloody emissions regs, better to have better economy and power to boot.

Glad to be of help and yes Adrian does know his stuff! By the way I'm pretty sure they have a 2.4 Ti Sportwagon for sale that has already had all of this done to it as he offered it to me just before christmas...Just spoke to Adrian at AlfaAid, who seems to know a lot about this. Yep, Adrian offered me this also! Sounds a beauty but, at £15k, without being able to trade mine in against it, it's a little outside of budget.Gassing Station | Alfa Romeo, Fiat & Lancia | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
