alfa gt 1300 junior , with condensor or points problem. by jamie and the magic torch, on Flickr
Poor old junior developed a points / condensor problem today. RAC guy tried for an hour. but couldnt fix it.
Problem is I just recently spent £280 getting the car set up properly - now I'll need to get new points & condensor fitted, & get the advance & points gap all set up again. Should I take it back to the rolling road guy who did it, or do you think my local oldschool garage can sort this without the need for the rolling road ?
Jamie if it's just the condensor it won't affect anything if you change it. Be careful to get the right fitting though, I have three distributors and they aren't fixed the same.
Another thing to check (If the RAC man didn't) is the rotar arm, again easy to fix but when it fails (and they do!) it's just dead, they break inside and don't provide conductivity from the centre contant to the wiping contact. Again make sure you get the right one, some pull off and push on, some fix with a little screw hidden underneath.
If you do need to change the points, I would just set it up statically using a light, following the instructions in the book. If it runs fine great, if it's a bit lumpy or not as good as it was take it back to your RR man and get him to adjust the timing with a strobe or on his system, it's a five minute job so if he's being fair it wouldn't cost much at all. Don't touch the timing until you are sure it's your points though.
I'm afraid not all the componants you can buy these days are as well made as they used to be, so Points, Condensors and particularly rotar arms fail more regularly than you would expect.
