EGR valve

Hi guys, had a problem with this causing car to hold back and smoke. Noticed you could get a blanking kit for the 16 valve cars but not for the 8 valve [different shape]. What are the advantages of having it or blanking it off? If I made one would it have to have small holes as the 16 valves do, or just completely blank.
