My daughter has a v nice condition GTV Twin spark.

Thing sounds like a poor diesel on start-up, a common TS issues I'm told. (first Alfa in the family)
It has done 75K and uses about 1 litre oil/1000.....

Anyway:

If I change the cam variator for a new one (belt was changed @ 60K by someone else)will the terrible clatter stop?
It is gone by about 60 seconds, but this cannot be right.

Is it possible to get this done under warrantee (bought from an independent dealer with a 12 month warrantee)

Like you said common on TS, but to be honest normally only happens if the oil is allowed to drop or very dirty oil. So yes a new variator should resolve the issue.

I think you might have a case but obviously they could argue the low/poor quality oil as defence.

Thanks for the advice.
I could do it myself but you need a special came retaining tool I have read.

Despite clean oil from a service to correct level etc it does it.
You can buy repair kits on ebay (bit iffy that) but it is nothing more than a plastic seal cap and a fresh spring.
Bet to fit a new genuine part.

When done how long do they last for?
I'll try the warrantee first.

You need the variator removal tool as well, all can be bought from http://www.totallyalfa.com/ (however their shipments have been slow of late!)

They should in theory last forever if oil levels/condition are correct, the variator on my GT has been on for the last 30-40k and is still perfect but I would replace every 2 cambelt changes (6 years) just to be safe.

Thank for the advice. The dealer changed the cam belt but not the variator at the same time...

Variator removal tool isn't needed...just a vice and strong pair of Stilson's laugh

You could try an engine flush to see if it clears the oilways to the variator.

But otherwise I wouldn't worry about it, just replace it at the next belt change interval.
