Not sure if this has been asked before - search not working! - but i've decided i want an Alfa saloon and thought i'd ask some knowledgeable Alfa owners!
With £5k to spend, which, in your opinion would be the best option?
a facelifted 166 (54/05-reg) 2.0 TS (Ti trim preferable!)
OR
159 Saloon (06/07-reg)- 2.2JTS
I know the ideal scenario would be a 166 V6 Manual, however i can't really justify all the trappings that go with the V6 - i.e fuel/insurance/tax etc.
So 4-cylinders i'm afraid (although i'm fine with that!)
This is not as easy as it sounds, by my reckoning....
The 166 is older and possibly less reliable(?) but handles better and lighter on its feet. Slightly cheaper to buy too, although cambelts could be a bigger problem & it's a (very) rare car!
159 is chain driven (am i right?) and more modern interior/looks and is in more plentiful supply, although this is at the lower end of the market + is the 1.9 JTDm a better version? (i know diesel not available on the 166)
Have any of you owned both? Any advice would be appreciated! Apologies for the wordy post but had to get it all out as its been going over in my head! Damn Alfa Romeo for making such desirable saloons! I never had this problem with the Audi & BMW!
Cheers

We discussed this on AO a few weeks ago. There have been a couple of such threads over the past year. Here's a link to the latest. I hope it's useful. With £5k to spend, which, in your opinion would be the best option?

FYI, the consensus seems to be that the 2.2 JTS in the 159 is thirsty, more akin to the V6 in the 166 than the Twinspark. The cabin space, especially rear legroom is less in the 159. The 166 also feels more special. To be fair, I reckon you should drive both rather than just relying on internet feedback.
