i mean got the blinkers on..
i use Alfaowner for tech help and i feel its a valuble forum.
however how do you try to educate some people?
http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-and-gt...
i understand it should be expected from a single marque owners club but come on!
i just cant be arsed replying to the last reply. I would have expected this from CORSAC but not and alfa forum!
(note copy and pasted PH explanation of Power and Torque couldnt be arsed explaining it)

AO has gone down the pan in the last few years..... it's slide probably directly related to the price of 156's
That said, having had a 250BHP 'petrol' 156GTA and compared it's real world performance with 170BHP and umpteen torque diesel (The BMW I owned afterwards) I sort of know what he means. It's very difficult to get the Petrol engines on 'cam' in order to catch the initial shove that the Diesels give with the torque. By the time you get there you are into licence loosing territory and sensible people would back off.... didn't seem like this bloke did!.
Back in the day when the 20v and the GTA were current models, it was fairly well accepted that the diesel wasn't a million miles behind in the performance stakes and a GTA would be comparable to a VXR so I'm not shocked the VXR struggled a bit.

maybe so, still even with a 150kg weight advantage the vxr is 75hp up 105 if a later model, plus think it has the same torque output, they are certainly what id call 'quick'.

but youve had experience with the said model so i do respect your opinion,
the most funny thing which really got me out of the whole debate is the guy who thinks alfa concentrate on making lightweight drivers cars all these years ago. And other marques are behind! Does he know cars have generally got heavier over time?
Haha, quite a read on the AO forum.. LOL!
Basically, to sum it up - power = torque x revs.
Diesels produce more torque, but at less revs. You can easily drive a diesel at 2,500 - 3,000 rpms and have 'instant torque' available, as that's where they make peak torque.
In a petrol, you'd probably not be driving at 5,000 - 6,000 rpms where a lot make peak torque. Even if the figure is lower, it's x2, as the engine is doing twice the revs of the diesel. Comparable.
It's easier to drive a diseasel quick, as there are no downshifts to worry about. Petrols are more involving.
End. LOL!
Oh, and if you want to go REALLY quick (other than buying an Alfa 20v diesel) buy a Veyron engine, and put it in a 4wd shopping trolley. 10,000hp / tonne...? HAHA!
