Hello, I m new to the Alfa section but as I consider buying one here is the question for the more knowledgeable...

I am after either an early GT (2005-06) or a 2nd gen GTV (2001-02). Have yet to decide on engine size etc but more interested in opinions on the drive experience, involvement and the quality of the car.

The pininfarina GTV is my favourite in terms of design but in my mind the GT is probably the easier to live with as it is newer technology.

I have yet to drive either of those (only had a quick ride on a 147 a while back which left me with a good impression and probably serves as a proxy for the GT). I will have a close look in a couple of them in the next few days.

Owned both, still own a GT.

Both brilliant. If practicality is event the slightest concern, forget the V.

I don't have kids or family to fit in so space is not primary concern.

When I say easy to live with I mean that I wouldn't like to find my self owning a car the will have to be 6 months in a year in a shop to rectify a loooooong list issues.

If the GT, being the newer car, is considered a lot more robust I would like to know.
or if either is considered a better drive.

It'll have to be the V6 with either of them. Straight line performance is pretty similar I believe, GT may edge it but not noticeably.

Comparatively, the GTV has no boot, no rear seats, no ground clearance and no turning circle. I think the GTV has the prettier interior (and exterior, just).

Does the GT have the passive rear wheel steer and stupidly quick steering like the GTV?

Post 98 GTV has the best interior. GT has pretty normal handling and steering - a well sorted GTV is one of the best FWD handling cars there is.

Seats are better in the GT. GT has usable rear seats and a decent boot. GTV has a tiny boot and a rear seat for yoga masters of the lotus position.

Drive both, see which you prefer. My missus is on the hunt for a GT due to the practicality issue, otherwise I'd just give her my spider.

Over the last couple of days I had a go with a 02 GTV (3lt) and a 07 GT (2lt)
Both great drives but the GTV feels more special (especially with that engine)

The thing is that the GTV has 75k while the GT has just 35k miles, so double age and double mileage for the GTV. The GTV was maintained properly from a mechanical point of view BUT it has such an extensive wear and tear (inside and out) that as much as I like it doesn't emerge as an obvious winner. Do these 3lt engines last for 100k+ miles ?

Of course you might say check for another example but in the country that I am currently there are mainly toyotas, nissans and hondas on the streets so not much of choice either...

I know some that has an Alfa 2.5 V6 with over 220,000 miles on it!

If serviced and treated to cambelts, the V6 is apparently a very robust engine.

GT is bound to have fewer miles on though being half the age, maybe depends how long you plan to own it for?

Get a 3.2 GT.

The GTV is a better drive IMHO. The GT feels (comparatively speaking) a little heavier and more cumbersome. The GTV is also better styled inside and out...

The 2 litre GTV is a better drive than a 3.2 GT. On the heavier engined cars, the double wishbone front suspension makes the GT a sharper steer, IMHO of course.
