I am on the market for an Alfa and found an otherwise decent '07 GT but with a selespeed (mind you I m on a country that you really see Alfa's altogether). Did a bit of a research and apparently selespeed is to be avoided as electronic and not only issues can be expensive to fix and ruin the experience altogether.
The thing is, the car I am looking at is a 07 reg. most of the negative comments on the web are from cars from late 90s early 2000s mainly from 156 and 147. Anyone knows whether the system was improved/advanced during that time for the GT series at all or is it an accident waiting to happen?

Many thanks

I have an early Selespeed which hasn't given me a moments trouble in many miles of use. They do choose the wrong gear occasionally, and can be a right pain parking but I believe the later systems are much better. There does seem to be a lot of talk on forums about them being unreliable; on the plus side Selespeeds usually have all the goodies installed, as mine does. Mine is a little crude, but when driving long distances it actually performs quite well.

I would definitely try driving it first, and also try parallel parking! TBH they do take a little while to get used to.

I bet you will get loads of posts now telling you to stay away!

I did gave it a go the other day, albeit for a short drive (a mile or two) as the owner had is SORN (equivalent) and had very little gas in it. The first gear engage from stop was gittery otherwise when at speed it up/down shifts were pretty smooth.

When they work they are brilliant.

It's not a conventional auto, its still a manual box with an actuator system bolted on.

I love them personally and it's been revised several times to make it more stable so if you like the 07 GT I would go for it.

The worst thing about the GT's unfortunately is that JTS engine... many are low down on power.

You'd have more fun with the JTD or the 3.2, but then you can't have the selespeed.

When you state that you cannot have Selespeed in a 3.2 are you referring to the 156 GTA ? I ask because I have one that is Selespeed but am generally told that no one has ever seen one before.

There are a few GTA selespeeds around, but they are as rare as rocking horse sh!t...

Generally, I think Fiat / Alfa did a pretty good job with the selespeed - years ahead of DCT / DSG, available at a good price and quite a laugh on the right open road. 'Auto' mode was quite special though...

The only thing that needed replacing on my Sele is a relay, for the princely sum of £9. They do need adjusting from time to time though.

There're not perfect, they can tend to be jerky, and slow speed manouvering takes practice. But I'd have another.

Lots of seles died because people did bad things to them, like putting screenwash in the reservoir! I suspect this was a significant proportion of failures.

That said, they still weren't enormously reliable even when treated nicely, but when happy they do work very well by all accounts.
