Flip over to the fiatforum.com - plenty of info on there.
FWIW I have a Fiat Barchetta which in essence is an HGT with a different body on it. Handles really well, engine is bulletproof as long as it is serviced on a regular basis, running gear is equally robust. Not sure quite what the bodywork on the Punto's is like, but the Barchetta is fully galvanized, so they don't suffer from the traditional Italian oxidization issues!!
One big weakness is the variators, start the car from cold - it should rattle for no more than a second or so while the oil pressure builds then go away, if it continues to rattle walk away as it will require changing (along with the cam belt, water pump etc) - probably somewhere near £400 of work......
