Theres alfa v6 conversions out there, but if they compare to the very well sorted alfa v6 conversion ive seen to a lancia montecarlo then you have to do some serious suspension tweaking unless you have the reflexes of a cat and the arms of a gorilla to keep it in line!

Also for the x1/9 you can drop in a volumex motor from a lancia beta and I think there was also a conversion for the toyota mk1 mr2 engine.

Kitted x1/9s (I assume you mean the rimmer bros kit) are plentiful if you look in any of the classic car mags and often turn up on ebay.

Edit: interesting and unusual farran one on ebay at the moment! looks like a good price at the moment. (no affiliation )

I know where there is serious twin cam conversion farran for sale in very nice condition, about 200bhp(ish - hasnt been rolling roaded in a while) and laps snetterton on road tyres at about the same pace as a formula ford, should be quick enough for you

Best choice of engine is the uno turbo as it doesnt mess with the handling balance and you can near enough double the output of the 1500 without messing with internals.

Body kits? There are two worth mentioning, the eurosport type 2 and the dallara copy. Body suit the car very well indeed. There are several variants out there but those are the easiest to source.

Alternatives? Abarth prototipo, eurosport type 1 or farran (if you can find one - see above).

If you want more advice just ask - I am technical advisor to the owners club if that counts for anything

Should have read your post first - that would be my friends car that I mentioned.

Is seriously quick for a road car! He wants me to look after it as he has to move soon but I have nowhere to put it

The stock X1/9 is actually geared for about 135mph flat out and some will do that other just dont rev that well (luck of the draw). Most will do 125mph though.

Performance with the uno turbo engine depends on a lot of things. I use a long first gear and 20" diameter tyres in my car, plus it is about 2/3rds the weight of a normal car (the new one will be 1/2 the weight at roughly 500kg)

I get a 0-60 time of roughly 4.5 seconds on 140bhp sae. A "stock" engine in a an otherwise stock car would likely be around 7.5 to 8 seconds but you can raise boost from 0.6bar to 1bar without internal modifications and knock the time down by quite a margin. Lose some weight out of the car and it drops again.

A well sorted (still stock engine) X1/9 with the uno turbo motor will happily pull 0-60 in about 6 seconds. Top speed will remain unchanged (might even be a bit lower if anything due to the rev limiter). Spend some money on the engine and induction setup and you could see nearer 200bhp and get the 0-60 time down to sub 5 seconds, or lower if you are willing to compromise the car for road use.

What you get with that turbo motor though is mid-range punch. In real terms it makes the car much, much faster than the "power" would suggest.

I would suggest talking to Julian Cann (if you can get hold of him) as he has done a few high power X1/9 conversions. Martin Thomas of the Sporting Fiats Club is also a good source of information.

What you have to remember is that the X1/9 once it has been on a diet (not a particularly serious one) is a fairly light car, coupled with it's usual low gearing (much lower than other "fast" cars) and the torque from a turbo engine you are left with something that is very quick indeed.

The beauty of the MkI Uno Turbo engine is that it is seriously over engineered as Fiat had no experience of such things and didnt want to make the same mistake Renault made with engines blowing up all over the place. Tuning it is relatively easy although parts are not generally available off the shelf as they are for say the R5 but they are still all available.
