Hi everyone,

I'm a newby here, so I'm still trying to find my way around the website.

I bought a 53-plate Alfa 156 (1.9 JTD 16V Veloce M-Jet [140bhp]) only 4 months ago, as everyone advised me to "follow my heart", and go for the drop-dead gorgeous Alfa! I've had troubles with it though..

Engine doesn't start now. The Alfa Romeo garage has said that my 1st injector is covered in carbon and oil, and that the 2nd one is following close behind. As such, he said I need two new injectors (claiming they cost £400 each, plus VAT), and said it's a difficult job. He then said the seals need to be changed, and the whole system cleaned from the oil & carbon.

Can anyone advise me on what to do? I'm moving abroad in two months' time. The Alfa dealer suggests it's a £1500-£1800 job, or that it's best I scrap the car instead, but I don't want to do that. It's top-spec and looks brand new! Is it best to put it right? Or to break up the car and sell the parts?

Does anyone know of JTD injectors?
a) Where to buy them (for less than £400);
b) if it's an easy job to change them and clean the system;
c) and where to do so?

I'm based near Luton, Bedfordshire.

Thanks!!

Have you tried Autolusso in Dunstable? http://autolusso.co.uk
Or Alfa Workshop in Royston? http://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk

well used ones go for anywhere between £40 and £100 eg
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-MAREA-BRAVA-MULTIPL...
he has two handily.

as for difficulty if you're reasonably switched on you can replace them yourself then run a bit of flush through and do an oil and filter change should run you a couple of hundred quid at most if you do it yourself.

I think its a bit of a p*ss take myself charging that much

i forgot the seals, about a fiver for a pack of 4 off ebay, new. i suggest you try a different garage if you want to keep hold of your money. i know you pay alfa tax on a lot of stuff but £1000 is mercedes territory

also you may be interested to know that the engine is the same unit as Vauxhall/Opel CDTI and Saabs TiD engines so look for parts from those marques as well

Hey guys - you've been really helpful.

Someone else has also just recommended the Autolusso garage, in Houghton Regis, Dunstable.

And thanks for the info on the work. I'm afraid I don't think I'm capable of doing the work myself....not enough knowledge. But if you think an Alfa specialist (such as the Alfalusso garage) could do it for, say, £200-£400, then I'd be happy to pay for that. Also, thanks for letting me know that Alfa shares parts with the CDTI engines of those other marques. I'll bare that in mind when it comes to buying the injectors.

Any further info is welcome. Many thanks once again! smile

Engine doesn't start? Wouldn't scream "dirty injectors" to me... definitely speak to Autolusso.

Injectors are fairly common on these engines - not heard of them stopping an engine starting at all before though, usually just very rough running/vibrating accompanied with poor MPG. I had two replaced on mine (by Autolusso, coincidentally) after it was vibrating like mad and difficult to start without being smoky. It made a huge difference and didn't take long to do - they send them all off to a local firm who test and recondition if possible and if not you need two new ones - or second hand ones (which can again be checked and reconditioned if you want).
If that's the only problem it's certainly not worth breaking the car for.

remove an injector is not to different from taking a spark plug out. undo diesel pipes so they are out of the way loosen the clamp and they should prise out, can be tight sometimes. put new seals when replacing, i would try second hand off ebay about £50 each.
