Is this "normal" considering the amount of oil these engines use? The car has done 127k and is pretty thirsty on oil. I have noticed under acceleration that occasionally there is a plume of smoke from the exhuast. I dont know how worried to be!

Ha ha. I love "your topics" in your profile. four threads started recently all of which are for separate alfa issues.

What colour is the smoke? If it's blue, it's a concern as there's too much oil getting into the combustion, if it's white, much less likely to be a worry.

I know, i always to end up pretending the problem doesn't exist anyway hehe

why the change of username?

Ali T - I would say its white smoke, if its blue its very very pale.

balders118 is rubbish as it roots from the fact I was watching a 118118 advert when I made it up. Plus people probably think I drive a 118d.

Hopefully less of an issue then. Could just be water vapour clearing or some exhaust soot from the cat. My Evo lets out a huge plume of sooty smoke if I floor it after driving gently for a few days.

If it's heavy on oil, there probably is a fair bit of oil in it. As long as you keep it topped up it's not a huge problem.

My 147 uses a lot of oil, approx 1l per 500 miles, some of it's leaking but it does burn a fair bit too. However in the 3 and bit years it hasn't got any worse and nothing engine related has gone bang, suspension and electrics however...

Do you know our cars sound very similar. Mine probably uses 1l per 800miles or so and leaks from the cam cover gasket (which ill get fixed when i do the cambelt in a few months.) The suspension won't stop creaking not matter how many new wishbones it gets and i've had to unplug the MAF sensor until i can afford to replace it hehe
