Barchetta cranking but not starting....
Discussion
Hi all,
I would like to pick your collective brain:
1995 Fiat Barchetta, been off the road for a few years. All the lights that should go out go out with the ignition on (no immobilizer problem), and when the key is turned to the starting position the engine turns over, sounds like it fires on the first crank, but makes no attempt to fire thereafter.
Thoughts are so far:
The injection system light comes on when its turning over and goes off a few seconds after stopping - I can't remeber if it did this previously or is meant to normally.
There is half a tank of petrol and the car ran perfectly the last time it was running. The battery we are using is a bit old and tired though fine for starting and running a Volvo V70.
Could it be old petrol flagging up an error on a sensor and stopping the fuel pump or injectors?
The battery is currently off, but I will hook it up, try again and plug in Multiecuscan to see if it can pick anything up tomorrow.
Cheers
Felix

Just had a look. Can't scan at the moment due to not having the right cable adapter.
Having scanned now iI have the cable, There are no error codes, and nothing appears wrong from the test apart from I think I have tracked the problem to the fuel pump. The fuel pump relay can be heard, either on when trying to start or specifically running it using the ecu software, though there is no evidence of the fuel pump running in terms of noise. At some point during trying a few things over the last few days, a 10A fuse i believe to be the fuel pump one has blown. The fuel pump appears to have power to it when the fuse is intact.
From these things I guess the fuel pump is stuck or burnt out.

Crank sensor?
This was the other possibility, from things I've read or heard when talking to people. Is there a way to test short of replacing it?The other thing - the fuel cut off. On the Barchetta it's a switch to reset by the drivers seat. It is pressed via a small opening in the carpet that allows the carpet to flex enough, though there is not a "positive" feeling when I press it (like a click or anything like that). I guess this is normal though.
I'm not sure how to test them, but I know you can. Could it be as simple as putting the ignition on and testing for a 12v at the sensor? They normally start failing when they are hot, giving the frustrating scenario of your car starting as soon as the RAC arrive because the car has cooled down by then! Eventually they just give up the ghost. They're not expensive to replace though and it would be my starting point having had them fail on two Alfas.
