Alfa Romeo Guillieta

I drove a 170bhp diesel TCT for a while when trying to sell my dad's and I was pretty shocked by the economy to be honest. On 4 weeks of work commuting (25 miles each way, half on a quiet motorway at 70 and half on a flowing A-road at 50) I couldn't get more than 46mpg. The EC combined is 60, and if it had returned 60mpg I might have been tempted to buy it myself.
For comparison, other cars that I own or used to own doing exactly the same journey at the same speeds: Punto 1.2 does 47mpg (EC combined 47), Mini Cooper did 41mpg (EC combined 42) and TT 2.0 does 39mpg (EC combined 37).

In the real world, what 2.0 diesel returns an mpg of 60?For comparison, other cars that I own or used to own doing exactly the same journey at the same speeds: Punto 1.2 does 47mpg (EC combined 47), Mini Cooper did 41mpg (EC combined 42) and TT 2.0 does 39mpg (EC combined 37).
I think mid 40's is acceptable. I had use of a Mini Cooper D for a week, that was a 1.6 and only managed 48 mpg while I had it so by comparison I think the Giulietta is good on fuel. Try the petrol TCT, that only does about 30!!!!

Mine is a 2012 with TCT and it's done 26,000 miles. I get anywhere between 40-45 mpg, reliability is absolutely fine just as it has been on Alfas over the last 20 years or so. Much to the disappointment of the pub 'experts'.
Unfortunately my 156 has upheld the pub expert opinion. Its got under my skin enough that i just keep throwing money at it though

Everything I've read about your car tells me the issues you're experiencing are relatively minor overall though and to be fair the cars 12 years old and done 130,000 miles or there abouts. BMW's, Audi's and Mercs of a similar vintage have issues as well, I don't care what anyone says to the contrary on here.

relatively minor (except the water pump failing) just lots of them! I reckon servicing and maintenance and consumables this car costs me around £1100 per year. Maybe more, i'm too scared to work it out! Its because it comes in relatively small lumps that i keep it going
You're right about it not being necessarily 'cos its an alfa though. My dad's high miler E46 330i has cost him a fortune, mainly because the gearbox went to the tune of £2.5k!
I have a 2.0 170 manual and on a run I can get damn close to 50mpg in D mode. 42-ish in mixed driving. Not at all unhappy with that. Great car, delighted with it. Have a few minor things but I put that down to mine being an early car and they are certainly no deal breaker. Would love to try the TCT on my engine too.
HOWEVER.......
I have just returned from Italy where I had the 1.6 diesel as my hire car, and TBH I think it is the sweeter engine and in real life doesn't give too much away to the 2.0 (I would say the 1.6 in Dynamic feels only slightly slower than my 2.0 in N). And the hire car felt just a bit better screwed together than mine too, so any earlycar-itis would appear to have been sorted. Go for it - you won't be disappointed despite what the UK press and pub bores say ;-)

Mrs Crostonian has a Giulietta 1.6 JTDm part funded by work who insisted she had a diesel however she can't get it to do more than 46mpg in mixed daily use so in reality she'd probably have been better off with the 1.4 Multiair petrol.
I've got a 12 plate 1.6 JTDm for the daily grind. Returns around 55mpg+ and is dirt cheap in co. car taxGassing Station | Alfa Romeo, Fiat & Lancia | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
