Step front rebuild
Discussion
Thought I'd stick up a couple of pics of my step front with its new 2 litre Nord. I posted previously about a few issues I've had and the supplying dealer being excellent in covering costs of a rebuild. This is the end result, back on the road last night. Chuffed isn't a big enough word!
Luckily I have a fabulous Alfa specialist nearby with Gareth from Northern Alfa performance who did the removal and refit of the new engine plus overhaul of the gearbox and a few other jobs while it was in. He's meticulous and extremely careful of your pride and joy and I wouldn't trust anyone else. Being northern also his labour rates are fabulous if anyone is considering work on either a classic or modern Alfa, he can do anything. On this occasion because he was so busy I had the actual machining and build of the engine done by another old school Alfa guy who builds for classic Alfa occasionally.

Looking good! Excellent service by the selling dealer!
Shouldn't the breather on the valve cover either have a filter or go to a catch can? Are you running any kind of filter/foam socks on the stacks? Hopefully this is just for the picture!?
Yea it needs finishing we only got away at 6pm last night and I've done 31m in total. You don't run a breather filter direct but I will fit one to a small catch can shortly. The trumpets are GTA type copies and ideally need filter socks i guess. They look period but I need to protect the engine. The noise is fabulous even at running in revs!Shouldn't the breather on the valve cover either have a filter or go to a catch can? Are you running any kind of filter/foam socks on the stacks? Looks nice under the bonnet, but the pair of metal washers on the camshaft cover are in the wrong place;
iirc the two front pairs should be fibre and the rear pair metal (nobody seems to know why).
Also the flats on the retaining bolts look to be lining up perfectly, which is either a very happy coincidence,
or they have not been torqued correctly.
The workshop manual gives instructions of the order of their gentle tightening so as not to strain the camshaft journal bearings. They do not give the torque figure though.

They are going to be swapped for the other type classic Alfa sell in time. I had heard about the fibre/metal washers and will look into that ta. iirc the two front pairs should be fibre and the rear pair metal (nobody seems to know why).

As far as I can see in your photos, you already have the correct set of washers,it's just that they have been put in the wrong places.
