156 2.4 JTD Fundamental Gearbox Problem?
Discussion
Is the gearbox on the 2.4 JTD different than the other engines in the 156 range? Mines been crunching intermittantly from first to second since my company bought it at 8,000 miles last year (when less than 6 months old) and its had 2 (yes 2) brand new gearboxes fitted under warranty since (now at 30,000 miles). However the gearchange in first and second is still crap and I'm beginning to wonder whether its a design fault on the car? Surely it should of been sorted with new gearbox(es)..?
Anyone else experienced this? Third and fourth is fine but first three gears are always notchy. And yes I am depressing clutch sufficiently!

Have heard about this from other JTD owners but mine when I had it was fine.
It's not the fastest box in the world especially when cold but was OK otherwise.
Having said that I was brought up double declutching so tend to be fairly gentle
on boxes anyway.
In the 75 gearbox oil was critical with Redline synthetic being much preffered,
maybe worth a try on the 156?

I have a 2005 156 JTD 2.4 Diesel. The car is only 3 months old and has covered 1500 miles. The car is currently at a Alfa dealer and I hdon't want it back untill it's fixed, hopfully within the next 14 days.
Between 0 - 984 miles 2nd and 3rd gear became increasingly notchy, 3rd would even grind. The gearbox was teasted & found to be faulty by a local Alfa dealer who replaced the box under warranty. The exchange unit fitted by Alfa was no better, if not worse.
Alfa said "I must drive the car and put some mile's on it before thay would do anything"
No chance, I believe this is due to faulty synchromesh mechanisems and will not improve by putting mileage on the vehicle, the car was returned to the selling dealer to sort out.
The only thing that would happen is that the car would have higher mileage, be older and worth less thus weekening my position.
I've also found out since that this aparently is the same box fitted to the Fiat Croma and Fiat have a number of customer issues on going.
Acording to an Alfa representative it is a design fault in the Fiat.
Look forward to any comments on this issue.

Thats very interesting. Not wanting to sound negative, but if its a fundamental design fault then presumably at this stage of the croma/156s lifetime its never going to get sorted...?
